More International Players Enter World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba
Promising Young Players Brooks Koepka and Roberto Castro Also Competing
Playa del Carmen, Mexico - A group of players from Argentina, Australia, Venezuela, South Africa, Spain and Sweden are the latest International players to commit to the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba scheduled for November 11-17 at the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón Golf Club in Mexico’s Riviera Maya and Cancún region.
Freddie Jacobson competed in all four majors last year, finishing T25 in the Masters Tournament.
In addition, two of golf’s hottest young players have committed to play. The 21-year-old Brooks Koepka led entering the final round of the Frys.com Open last week before finishing third. So far in 2013, the Florida State standout has won three times on the European Challenge Tour. Roberto Castro, 28, had an impressive finish to the PGA TOUR season late this summer and into the fall. After finishing second at the AT&T National, Castro was tied for 12th at the PGA Championship and in the four-event FedExCup Playoffs was never out of the top 25, including two top-10s. He finished the regular season 29th on the PGA TOUR money list.
Tournament officials announced today commitments from Tim Clark (South Africa), Alvaro Quiros (Spain), Jordi Garcia Pinto (Spain), Freddie Jacobson (Sweden), Andres Romero (Argentina), Jose Coceres (Argentina), Jhonattan Vegas (Venezuela) and both Stuart Appleby and Robert Allenby (Australia).
To date, 30 International players are in the field.
“We have always been proud to host a variety of international players at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba,” said Joe Mazzeo, Tournament Director. “As Mexico’s only PGA TOUR event and the only full-field event offering full FedEx Cup points outside the United States or Canada, it is important to us to maintain the international feel to this event. Each week the field continues to gain in strength and in character as we prepare for a new era in this event’s history.”
Clark is currently ranked 70th in the world and is a past champion of the prestigious THE PLAYERS Championship. Quiros, is a six-time winner on the European Tour and Garcia Pinto won this year on the European Challenge Tour. Romero and Coceres have a combined three wins on the PGA TOUR. Coceres finished second in the inaugural World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, losing in a playoff to Fred Funk in 2007. Allenby was another victim of a Mayakoba playoff, losing last year to John Huh in an historical, eight-hole playoff—the second longest in PGA TOUR history. Vegas, winner of the 2011 Humana Challenge, is the first player from his country to win on the PGA TOUR. Appleby is a nine-time winner and Jacobson has one victory on TOUR.
Earlier tournament officials announced commitments from eight major championship winners—Darren Clarke (British Open), Mark Calcavecchia (British Open), Lucas Glover (U.S. Open), Trevor Immelman (Masters), Justin Leonard (British Open), Davis Love III (PGA Championship), David Toms (PGA Championship) and Mike Weir (Masters). Collectively, this group has won more than 70 titles on the PGA TOUR.
Last year's runner-up Robert Allenby will be competing at Mayakoba for the second time.
Huh, who won the 2012 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, will return to defend his title. Huh’s victory propelled him to PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year honors last year. Joining Huh are all other past champions of the tournament—Fred Funk (2007), Brian Gay (2008), Mark Wilson (2009), Cameron Beckman (2010) and Johnson Wagner (2011).
The 2013 edition of the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba represents the beginning of a new era for Mexico’s only PGA TOUR event. For the past six years, the tournament has been played opposite the World Golf Championships—Accenture Match Play Championship in which the world’s top 64 players were required to play. This year, the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba has its own date on the PGA TOUR calendar.
Additionally, the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba has increased its purse to US$6 million and will offer a winner’s check of US$1.08 million as well as a full allotment of 500 FedExCup points to the champion. The prize purse continues to be the largest in all of golf in Latin America. The event is contracted until 2018, representing a total commitment of 12 years by the PGA TOUR to Mexico. The World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba is the only golf tournament staged in Mexico which offers full television coverage—with 12 hours of live High Definition broadcast slated for 2013.
OHL, a multi-billion dollar construction and development company based in Madrid, Spain, serves as the tournament’s primary sponsor after developing the Mayakoba resort as a tourism complex. Included in the award-winning resort are three luxury hotels and the tournament venue, the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón Golf Club. Further development at Mayakoba will see the construction of two additional luxury hotels and the creation of a second phase of the property which will ultimately feature a second championship-caliber golf course and additional hotels and real estate properties.
Through six years, Mayakoba has welcomed some of the biggest names and most accomplished players in professional golf. Among the event’s past participants are: Stuart Appleby, Aaron Baddeley, K.J. Choi, John Daly, Jason Day, David Duval, Bill Haas, J.B. Holmes, Charles Howell III, Fredrik Jacobson, Lee Janzen, Jerry Kelly, Matt Kuchar, Tom Lehman, Graeme McDowell, Greg Norman, Jose Maria Olazabal, Nick Price, Rory Sabbatini, Brandt Snedeker, David Toms, Scott Verplank, Bubba Watson, Boo Weekley and more.
