As the tournament’s 15th anniversary edition draws near, the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba is poised to host its strongest field ever as currently seven of the top-20 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are confirmed. World no. 7 Justin Thomas leads a power-packed list of international stars who will tee it up at El Camaleón Golf Course at the Mayakoba resort November 4-7 in Mexico’s pioneering PGA TOUR event.
In addition to Thomas, tournament officials today announced confirmations from Tony Finau (#11 in the world ranking), Harris English (#14), Tyrrell Hatton (#17) and Billy Horschel (#20). Last week, Mexico’s Abraham Ancer (#12) and defending champion Viktor Hovland (#15) were announced and confirmed to compete on Mexico’s Riviera Maya.
Additionally, European stars Matt Fitzpatrick, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson will make their tournament debut as they tee it up at Mayakoba for the first time. Dynamic young American stars Matthew Wolff and Will Zalatoris will also compete at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba with Wolff making his tournament debut as well.
“This field is so exciting,” said Tournament Director Joe Mazzeo. “With such a compelling mix of highly-ranked stars, both veteran and youth, it shapes up to be our best field ever. Beyond just being great players, there are some truly incredible personalities who will make for a fun and thrilling competition. It’s a wonderful way to welcome our new Title Sponsor World Wide Technology and showcase what many in the game of golf have known for a long time now—that Mayakoba and this tournament are truly special.”
Other top names also confirmed to compete next month include Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Brandt Snedeker, Gary Woodland, Italy’s Francesco Molinari and England’s Danny Willett and Ian Poulter. The tournament will feature a healthy complement of additional top-50 players including Ryan Palmer, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Brian Harman and Garrick Higgo.
Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland is among ten past champions who are confirmed to return in 2021 along with Brian Gay (2008), John Huh (2012), English (2013), Charley Hoffman (2014), Pat Perez (2016), Patton Kizzire (2017), Matt Kuchar (2018), Brendon Todd (2019) and Hovland.
The World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba will feature a distinct flavor from last month’s Ryder Cup as eight of the 24 participants at Whistling Straits are already confirmed in this year’s field, while Stenson and McDowell were Vice Captains for the European side. Also confirmed are Luke Donald, another European Vice Captain, and Zach Johnson, who served as Vice Captain for the victorious American team.
Finally, Latin America will be well represented once more with commitments already confirmed for Emiliano Grillo of Argentina, Mito Pereira of Chile, Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela, and Camilo Villegas of Colombia. Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz was announced and confirmed last week. Also representing Mexico will be Roberto Diaz, Juan Carlos Benitez and Juan Diego Fernandez. Diaz is the highest-ranked Mexican in the World Golf Ranking after TOUR members Ancer and Ortiz, while Benitez and Fernandez received sponsor exemptions by virtue of winning qualifying events at the Mayakoba Match Play presented by UNIFIN and the UNIFIN Invitational at Mayakoba respectively.
Players for the field of 132 competitors have until 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, October 29, to commit to the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba and can withdraw from the tournament at any time.
Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and an abundance of caution, tickets for the public will not be available this year.
