Sebastian Vazquez holed a chip from off the green for birdie on the final hole of the day to win the Mexican Qualifier and secure his spot in the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, Mexico's pioneer PGA TOUR event. Vazquez finished with a 5-under-par 101 total in the 27-hole tournament to beat a field of 25 players.
The 2022 edition of the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba will mark Vazquez's fourth appearance (2016, 2018 and 2019) at the PGA TOUR event at Mayakoba, which will be held October 31-November 6 at El Camaleon Golf Course in the Riviera Maya.
Vazquez carded a 5-under-par (101 strokes) to beat Pablo Rincon Gallardo (-4), Alvaro Ortiz (-3) and Raul Pereda (-3) in a thrilling finish at El Camaleon Golf Course. With this victory, Vazquez joins Armando Favela in representing Mexico in the field of the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba; Favela triumphed in the Mayakoba Match Play to earn his ticket last Monday, September 5.
"I'm very happy, I made very good putts and made the chip-in on 18 which was the most important shot of the round," said Vazquez. "I have worked very hard these last few months and I am very happy with my result. I'm going to keep doing things right and continue to work on my game and also arrive mentally prepared to be able to enjoy the game. Many thanks to all the organizers, RLH Properties, Mayakoba and all the sponsors especially World Wide Technology who support us to have an event of this magnitude in Mexico," he added.
The format of the Mexican Qualifier was based on 27 holes of stroke play (18 holes for the entire field, with a cut to the best 12, who played a second round of only nine holes).
