Scottie Scheffler Confirmed for World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba
Reigning Masters Champion and World No. 2 to Make Third Career Start at Mexico’s Pioneering PGA TOUR Event
Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler, ranked No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking, has officially committed to compete in the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba next week at El Camaleón Golf Club at Mayakoba on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. This year’s event will once again feature 132 PGA TOUR players competing in 72 holes of stroke play for an $8.2 million purse.
Scheffler, at 26 years of age, is currently one of the game’s brightest stars. Through only three years competing at the game’s highest level – the PGA TOUR, he has already reached World No. 1 and earned the Jack Nicklaus Award as PGA TOUR Player of the Year. During his incredible 2021-2022 season, he won four times on TOUR, including this year’s Masters Tournament, the WM Phoenix Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and the World Golf Championship-Dell Technologies Match Play. He also finished second in the FedExCup Standings.
“Being able to announce the commitment of the world’s no. 2 ranked player to our fans and sponsors is so exciting for us,” said Tournament Director Joe Mazzeo. “As the reigning Masters champion and the PGA TOUR Player of the Year, there’s nobody in golf who has enjoyed a better 2022 than Scottie Scheffler. We are thrilled that the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba will be a part of Scottie’s incredible year. It’s a testament to this iconic event here in Mexico and a result of the commitment and dedication of our Title Sponsor World Wide Technology and our host Mayakoba and RLH Properties.”
With Scheffler’s commitment, there are currently five players among the top-16 in the world rankings who are scheduled to compete and include players announced earlier this week: Collin Morikawa (#9), Viktor Hovland (#11), Tony Finau (#14), and Billy Horschel (#16).
Additionally, the field currently features several other Major Champions, including Jason Day of Australia, Lucas Glover, Jason Dufner of the USA, Francesco Molinari of Italy, and Justin Rose and Danny Willett of England.
2022 will see seven former champions return to Mexico—Brendon Todd, Matt Kuchar, Patton Kizzire, Charley Hoffman, Harris English and John Huh are all scheduled to join Hovland in this year’s field. Sebastian Muñoz, Emiliano Grillo, and Augusto Nuñez will represent Latin America.
Mexico will be represented by four players, as this week, tournament officials extended an invitation to Jose de Jesus Rodriguez, from Irapuato, Guanajuato, and to lefthander Isidro Benitez from Puebla, Puebla, to join fellow countrymen Armando Favela of Tijuana, B.C., and Sebastian Vazquez of Merida, Yucatan, who earned their invitations via the Mayakoba Match Play and the Mayakoba Mexican Qualifier. Enrique Marin Santander will represent Spain as the winner of the Villa Magna Qualifier to Mayakoba.
Following two years with no public tickets due to the pandemic, 2022 will see the public welcomed back to Mayakoba as tickets are now on sale to witness the world’s best golfers tee it up at El Camaleón Golf Course and soak in the fantastic scenery of the Mexican Caribbean. Tickets are on sale now with pre-sale pricing at the tournament’s website www.WWTChampionshipatMayakoba.com.
Players for the field of 132 competitors have until 5 p.m. ET on Friday, October 28, to commit to the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba and can withdraw from the tournament at any time. Further field announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
