Q. (In progress) since the BMW Championship and you roll out of bed, first time here at the Cardonal and you go ahead and hit 18 greens, you hit 14 fairways and you're bogey-free 7 under par. I guess you did some practicing during that two-and-a-half-month stretch.
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, I did. I don't know about the 18 greens stat. It was close, but I don't know if it was quite that.
Yeah, it was nice. I was at home, I was able to practice consistently for almost two months, which I haven't had in a long time. It's been years I feel like since I've actually been home for that long. Just the ability to go out and really try some things and work through some issues that I felt like I had was honestly, one, was kind of fun for me, I haven't had the chance to do that without the pressure of an event coming up in a long time, and two, I think very productive. I think I learned some things in my golf swing. It's nice to come out and see 'em kind of work in the first competitive round.
Q. How's your patience been? You're 16th in the world but have yet to win on the PGA TOUR, so I know everyone comes up, you're going to win, you're going to win, but how's your patience as far as getting that first win?
CAMERON YOUNG: I think -- I think for a while I was all out, I didn't have much patience left. I think I've kind of come to terms with the fact that I've played plenty of golf that's worthy of winning a golf tournament out here. Obviously it hasn't worked out that way yet, but I think I've played plenty of good golf and I fully believe that that golf can win a tournament out here. So I've let go of it a little bit and I'm much more focused on trying to get better as much as I can.
Q. Kind of a strange question. We just passed Halloween, you grew up in Sleepy Hollow, home of the headless horseman. Was that a big deal growing up? Does Sleepy Hollow have a special Halloween deal?
CAMERON YOUNG: A little bit. I was never much a part of it, but that place is spooky all year 'round, it doesn't have to be Halloween. I lived in that clubhouse for about a year and it's -- it's definitely spooky up there. It's not the most comfortable place to be by yourself at night.
Q. Cam, clean card (no microphone.)
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, I felt very much in control today. I drove it really well, which is very helpful out here. I feel like just being in the fairway, they're plenty wide, but if you miss them, you're in trouble. So to have the first day where I wasn't in any of those situations is really nice.
Yeah, I didn't make a ton, but I hit a couple shots that didn't have to end up as close as they did, and they did. Kind of feel like that's how you shoot 7 under. You feel in control and you have a bunch of chances. Could have been 10, but 7 is perfect for me.
Q. (No microphone) and 18 of 18 greens, but just comments on the course and how obviously it seems to suit your game well.
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, I think it's a lot of fun. I think the fact that the fairways are generous kind of emphasizes the second shots. The greens are very dramatic so you have to pick your spots and pick your landing areas really well. So that's fun for me. I feel like you get to shape shots and use slopes around the greens. And the fact that it's not super tight is kind of nice, just especially having not played in a while. Obviously practice at home, but you're never quite sure what you're going to get. I drove it really well and was happy with how I played.
Q. And last question, BMW was your last start before this, I heard you talking to Fred a minute ago. Just kind of bring us up to speed what you've been doing, working on and how you're feeling heading into the week.
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, I've really been at home with my family. I've practiced not hours and hours on end, but just consistently every day. I haven't had kind of the time to do that in a few years really, so it was a nice time for me to kind of work on some mechanical stuff. Nice to see it -- nice to see it work today kind of how I intended. Everything felt pretty normal, so I was happy to be back out and glad to get a good round under my belt.
Q. You got a chance to play with Justin Timberlake --
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah.
Q. -- Wednesday in the pro-am. Talk about that and his game and how much fun that was.
CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, that was really cool. I actually had no idea I was playing with him. I saw his name on the scorecard and I thought that must be kind of someone else named Justin Timberlake, but it was not.
He's a blast to play with. He's a good golfer, I think he said he's been down near scratch at times and you can definitely see where that comes from. He hits it pretty hard. Yeah, he was really, really a pleasure to play with and we had a good time.
