Q. That was a good round of golf there. Is it fair to say you might feel there's more out there for you? I'm thinking about 14, the lip-out on 15. That little corner there you had some great opportunities.
MAVERICK McNEALY: Yes and no. I feel like I played really well. Yesterday the putts went in, today they didn't. I might have even played a little bit better yesterday in that wind. Really happy with how it went, a bogey-free round is never a bad thing. When this place gets crispy, those landing areas shrink up quite a bit and there's just some uncomfortable shots, so I'm really happy how the day went.
Q. Speaking of keeping it bogey free, the scramble save on 16, I thought that was a pretty hard second shot when you've got a tough bounce off the back hill there. Talk to me about playing that shot, because you could have gone low but you ended up taking it high.
MAVERICK McNEALY: Yeah. So first thing I did, I take a couple practice swings and just kind of feel how the turf's reacting on those. Luckily it was a slightly down grain area. I wouldn't have been able to hit that shot into the grain, so I just had to trust that it wasn't going to flub out of there and gave it some speed, made sure I just covered the front edge, fresh wedge and lots of spin.
Q. Now, since we had a lot of wind, we had little when you played, do you feel like you're ready to play this course in any condition now?
MAVERICK McNEALY: Yeah, it was a completely different golf course. We were joking that yesterday I hit a 3-wood off the tee on 18, was between 6- and 7-iron, and today was driver, 3-wood to the front edge. So entirely different course. You're seeing different bunkers and different landing areas. Even the greens play completely different. Like 15 with the wind off the right yesterday was a tiny any target and today felt like you could hit in a 30-yard wide bowl and it would end up in the same spot.
Q. Second round, always nice to be bogey free. How would you assess your round today?
MAVERICK McNEALY: It was solid, really good through 13 holes especially. Just a couple pars, a couple loose shots coming in, but scrambled really well when I needed to, kept it in front of me.
They're huge, wide fairways so it's always a bit of a struggle to bring your focus in a little bit more narrow. There's a few uncomfortable shots, too, but it was definitely a lot easier than it was with the wind yesterday.
Q. A day removed from your birthday, did you do any celebrating?
MAVERICK McNEALY: Not much celebrating. I had dinner with a couple friends out here
on Tuesday, but yesterday was a grind, it was hard work.
It was really uncomfortable because the last three days we've been practicing we've had like 20, 25 miles an hour wind off the right in all the ranges, even the range at home at TPC Summerlin, and standing on the first tee shot of the tournament I got 25 wind off the left, like a 50-mile-an-hour wind switch. I was like, please don't be a wide open clubface, but managed it well. There's just some really uncomfortable shots, but then some ones where you just get it in the bowl and it goes right next to the hole. Mixed bag between some really hard, easy shots out there.
Q. Not an easy day condition-wise, but also caddie-brother wasn't feeling well. How did that go?
MAVERICK McNEALY: Scout toughed it out. I saw him this morning in dining, I was like he does not look good. It put things in perspective because no shot I hit out there was harder than what he was going through today.
He did great. He's helped me so much the last couple weeks and I think my good play lately has been a lot due to the help he's given me over the last couple weeks.
And I'm excited he's going to be caddying for me through the end of the season. Talked him into it. The end of East Lake. We'll have a lot of fun. And he's a better green reader than I am, so helps a lot.
Q. What's that relationship like let alone calling golf shots but having someone who probably knows you the best in between the shots?
MAVERICK McNEALY: If I could tailor make a caddie, he's helped so much. We have a lot of fun, play a lot of golf when we're at home.
There's four of us and we're all super close. We always feel like we're a team. We're never really competitive with each other, we have more of a team mentality.
I'm excited to get all four of us back together over Thanksgiving and play some brothers golf. It's awesome. We shared a room growing up all the way through high school, so know each other extremely well.
Q. How much are you thinking about (inaudible)?
MAVERICK McNEALY: Quite a bit, that's why I'm playing so much this fall. I'm also playing a lot because I feel like I'm playing really well. My wife's traveling with me and we don't have kids yet, might as well just go play. They're handing out a check, handing out a bunch of points and a trophy, so living the dream playing on the PGA TOUR.
I think I'm in a pretty good spot for the top 60. Feels like I'm playing with house money a little bit. I definitely am not envious of the position that most of the guys in this field are in. It's a lot more stress-free golf for me and I'm just out here trying to win a golf tournament, have some fun in Cabo and see how good I can get my game going into the next year.
Q. Are you thinking more about Kapalua, Augusta?
MAVERICK McNEALY: Absolutely. I mean, item one was getting in Pebble and Riv, item two was top 50 in the world, Augusta and three is Kapalua. Got one of those pretty much ticked off, I think, and two more -- three more chances to get those other two done.
Q. What were the best birdies today?
MAVERICK McNEALY: I think my best birdie today was 13. It was my last birdie, that one was really good. There's a few shots out there where if you just hit it in a certain area, it funnels right to the hole. I've had a lot of inside of five-, six-footers for birdie, which is really good for me. Iron play has been historically the weakest part of my game, so really excited about how that's trending. And this is the best the putter's felt in months, which is awesome, but 13's probably the best one.
