Q. We'll start off, 4 under opening round. How would you assess your round?
ERIK VAN ROOYEN: Bit of a mixed bag. I started off swinging really good right out of gate and I did that yesterday in the proam as well, so bit of a carryover from yesterday. Then it got really windy, feel like I lost the club face a bit on the holes coming in. Just got really tricky if you don't quite have your start line down. I lost a drive right on 6, par 5, so I feel like I leaked a bit coming in. But I'm surprised to see the lead is at 4 under, it's obviously tricky out there.
Q. With it being so windy, do you feel pretty happy with being 4 under?
ERIK VAN ROOYEN: Yeah, absolutely. Completely different test than what we had last year. There was maybe one club of wind last year and like I said, I think this course kind of needs the wind for protection. The fairways are quite wide. I think 4 under's a good start.
Q. Did you say earlier in the week you were hoping the wind would pick up and the course would show its teeth?
ERIK VAN ROOYEN: Yeah. Like I said, the fairways are wide and it needs something to kind of test it. Everybody here, when it's calm and wide fairways, they're all going to hit it good. You need a bit of wind to separate us.
Q. Do you feel like this course just suits your game?
ERIK VAN ROOYEN: Yeah, I think so. I like moving the ball whether it's left to right or right to left. This course, the holes present themselves in a way that you can do that, you can use the wind if it's wide, work it with it or into it. And I'm a good putter and guys are going to hit a lot of greens, so you're going to have to putt well.
Q. Did you think about your friend much out there today?
ERIK VAN ROOYEN: Yeah, first thing this morning when I woke up, yeah, yeah.
Q. Is that pretty regular or is it being back here do you think triggered it?
ERIK VAN ROOYEN: For sure being back here triggered it. I think about him often, but obviously coming up on Monday, it's a year since he passed next week Monday, so obviously being here, coming up on Monday, thinking about him a lot, thinking about Allie a lot, his wife. So yeah, he's been on my mind. When I played the proam yesterday, I played the back nine and coming down 18 I got a bit emotional coming down there just with everything that transpired last year. Yeah, he's absolutely on my mind.
Q. You said there was some pressure a couple days ago. How do you feel right now first round mentally? You seem calm.
ERIK VAN ROOYEN: Yeah, I am calm. Round 1, there's always I love competing and so there's always whatever you want to call it, butterflies, adrenaline throughout the round in different moments, which is normal. Yeah, I feel pretty calm after the round.
Q. The couple bogeys at the end of the round, was it just kind of the wind or something in particular?
ERIK VAN ROOYEN: Yeah, definitely wind played into it. No. 7, the wind was really strong off the right and then 8 coming the complete opposite way off the left. You have to fight it I think with how strong it was. And like I said, I feel like I didn't quite have control of the club face the way I did only three hours earlier. It's a tricky game. Maybe not quite hitting it where I want to and the wind obviously played a big role.
