Q. Kris, nice bogey-free 64. What did you like about your opening round today?
KRIS VENTURA: Very consistent ball-striking, made some really good putts. I struggled a little bit in the practice rounds trying to learn the greens, but today my speed was good and I was reading them good. Overall, very happy with my day.
Q. As you look back from past seasons, Korn Ferry Tour to how the season's going now, what's been some of the biggest changes?
KRIS VENTURA: For me, it was a couple years ago when I decided to make some changes in my swing to be able to play more consistently. Yeah, since then my ball-striking has been better, which I can make more cuts, just shooting lower scores on a regular basis. Ever since then I've just built my confidence.
Obviously this season I would have liked to have played a little better so I don't have to be on that bubble, but it's just what it is.
Q. What's your focus these next three weeks? Are you fine-tuning anything in your game or just mentally focusing on these next three?
KRIS VENTURA: Yeah, honestly, there's not a lot of technical things that I'm working on. My swing is in a good spot. Mainly it's just for the most part it's just mental. I think it's always a battle, it's always a challenge each and every day but that's what makes golf fun.
These next three tournaments, just play like I did the last two weeks. If you let it get to you, the fact that you're trying to keep your card or keep your job, it's going to make it way harder to actually perform.
Q. Going off what you said about not trying to focus on keeping your card or letting that be the focal point, how do you do that? Just mentally focusing on one round at a time versus this big number of top-100?
KRIS VENTURA: Yeah. Honestly, in the past I've been the guy that has thought about results and thought about what I need, how many points and this and that. I know that that doesn't work. Like even if you're playing OK, you're kind of suffering through it.
I've just gotten tired of playing thinking about what if or what if I don't make it, what if I make it. These last few events I think it's super important to just play free and do your best. As long as I do that, I'm going to be happy regardless of what happens.
Q. Having spent your first 12 years here in Mexico, what are some of the earlier memories or maybe fondest memories?
KRIS VENTURA: I mean, I'm 50 percent Mexican so half my life has been over here almost. I went to college in the U.S. Yeah, this is where I started my career, I started very young when I was 3 representing Mexico all the way up until I was 12, and then we moved to Norway. So huge part, this is where I started. Yeah, just very happy to be back. It's always enjoyable when we play Mexico.
Q. And with other connections, we've had past college teammates win this, whether this tournament, Viktor Hovland or last year Austin Eckroat. Any connection there or
KRIS VENTURA: No. Hopefully it's good mojo for this week, right? Yeah, I've seen their pictures up at dining as past winners and I think that would be cool if I can give it a shot.
